Post Graduate Sweden: Degrees and Certificates

Swedish higher education degrees are regulated by the Degree Ordinance.

Master's programs lead to the Swedish degree magisterexamen, which is translated into English as "Master of" (indicating the major subject, faculty or specialization).

Degree ceryificates are always accompanied by an English-Language diploma supplement - describing the degree, content and level. The diploma supplement follows the model developed by the European Commission, council of Europe, and UNESCO/CEPES. The purpose of the supplement is to provide sufficient independent data to improve international transparency and fair academic and professional recognition.

There are two types of magisterexamen that comprise a minimum of 160 credit points (240 ECTS) (when including 120 credit points for a recognized bachelor's degree or equivalent).

A magisterexamen med ämnesbredd is an option for students who wish to add to their previous academic studies by pursuing studies in a different academic field. Students are required to write an independent thesis woth at least 10 credit points.

A magisterexamen med ämnesdjup allows students to build on previous academic study in their major subject. Students are required to present an independent thesis worth at least 20 credit points each.

A professional degree in Engineering, civilingenjorsexamen (Master of Science in Engineering) is awarded on completion of studies worth 180 credit points in the relevant discipline, including a degree project.
